Whakatane Boys have spectacular WIN in BIG SURF PIHA CLASSIC - moving to 3rd in Trillian Trust Surfboat Series

After a mill pond flat day on Friday, the weather turned on the big surf at Piha for Saturday's Surfboat racing in true form. The carnage and casualities of the first round of racing saw Whakatane lucky to finish with just a missing oar, as the IRB's rescued people and towed in stray boats.

Whakatane's second race saw huge set come through just after the starting gun went and Whakatane rowed straight into it with only them and JanJuc one of the visiting top Australian crews getting out clean. With near gale force winds at the can, Whakatane were trailing behind the Aussie crew and dug deep to use every ounce of muscle on the way home, rowing down the Aussie boys for a spectacular win!

The days racing saw Whakatane finish 4th overall, but 2nd NZ crew, which leaves them 3rd in the Trillian Trust Surf Boat Series, well done boys!

Congratulations girls! Ali Burns, Leah Tulloch and Madison Brown have all been selected for this year's BOP U16's team representatives, that Tony Lovett and Scott Burns are helping to manage and coach this season. Ali has also been named the captain of the team.

WSLSC 75th Jubilee fast approaching...

2008 is the Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated’s 75th Jubilee year, and the club is organising a celebration in Labour Weekend (Oct) 2008. The Jubilee event will consist (at this stage) of a registration afternoon, dinner function at the Ohope Hall and photos for each generation.
